May 15 Spring Tea Get together

We all had such a lovely time at our Spring Tea themed Paper Chicks get together that was held on Sunday, May 15! We spent the afternoon laughing, eating, chatting and creating. Our project was the cutest shabby chic mini cardholder made from recycled deck wood.See above picture created by Deanne. Please note if you want to use the cute, chubby mini paper clips used, they are in the catalog called 'Clips Assortment' - Item #112580 for $8.95 for a pack of 24(3 clips designs)
We all got busy and stocked up on card creations made from cards maps from Kristina Werner Designs.
Jill, who was also the lucky winner of the door prize I provided, worked on her baby books, Dee also did some scrap booking and I managed to finish this entire mini book for my mother in law's 96th birthday. Thanks to Deanne and Kiesha who wore lovely hats!!
I have some prepared deck board for anyone who wants to make this project and please click HERE for the template for the 3x3 cards and envelopes.
We snacked on Pizza Muffins(see recipe below) and Minestrone Soup and delicious scones, devonshire cream and jam for dessert! Yummo funno!

Pepperoni Muffins
3 cups Bisquik baking mix
1 can condensed tomato soup (10 3/4 oz) undiluted
3/4 cup water
1/2 cup grated mozzarella cheese
1/2 cup grated cheddar cheese
1/2 cup finely diced pepperoni( I used Baby Back Bacon)
2 tablespoons chopped ripe olives
1 tbsp dried mince onion
1 tsp Italian seasoning

1. Place biscuit mix in a large bowl. Combine the remaining ingredients, stir into biscuit mix, mix just until moistened. Fill greased muffin cups 3/4 full.
2. Bake at 350F for 17-20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Serve warm and refrigerate leftovers.

Hey Chickies old and new and guests!!
We are long overdue for a Paper Chicks get together. I know that some of you have been through some transitions in your life, most especially Kiesha. My condolences go out to you and your family Kiesha at the recent loss of your father. You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers.

Tasha and Keir just welcomed their new baby boy, Smith Thompson McIntyre, into the world, and Nicki is expecting a baby in October so congratulations to you both.
SO it's high time we got together to share some warm hugs!

When: Sunday May 15, 2011
Time: Anytime after 1:00 PM (lots to do)
Projects: Cards using the 15 amazing card maps I purchased from designer and Stampin' Up artist Kristina Werner Go here for the link.
Wooden card holder and mini cards (see photo)
Supplies: cardstock, printed paper and embelishements (ribbon, buttons, etc)for your cards as you will be making a ton! Adhesive! We will provide the plank of wood for the cards.
Theme: Spring tea (you must wear a hat!!!)
Babies in arms are always welcome and you may also bring a friend!

Monica's Ghetto Mist( my version of Glimmer Mist)
Fill spray bottle 3/4 full of water.
Add re-inker color of your choice
add 1/4-1/2 tsp. mica powder
Add 1/4 tsp. hair spray

Monica's Shimmer Paint Recipe
Fill a small container with any Metallic Pearl White Paint ( I used Folk Art brand availble at Walmart)
Add a few drops of re-inker until you achieve the color desired.
Stir well with a stir stick.

Both of these are very economical and work great!!

We had a wonderful time at the meeting making our Advent cookie sheets! They turned out so well.
For those of you who were unable to attend, here are the directions for the advent calenders:

1. Drill 2 holes in top left and right of cookie sheet. You can try this yourself or have your husband do this. Holes need to be large enough to string ribbon through.(Richard did it for everyone that was present)

2. Paint sides and rim of cookie sheet

3. .Cut papers and arrange as desired to cover back side of cookie sheet.

4. When paint dry, use a Sharpie marker to create a grid with 5 rows across and 5 rows down, evenly spaced. Note that the grid does not completely cover the sheet, the tops and bottoms are left blank for embellishing.

5. Use rub ons and add title: DECEMBER to top of grid. Another option is to cut a swag banner shape, paint it and add December rub ons to the banner when paint is dry. Glitter was added to the edges. If you add magnets to this banner, you can remove it and add other months later if you like! A monthly calendar, a birthday countdown, vacation countdown, or other holidays would be fun!

6. Add a smallish embellishment to lower right hand corner of calendar.

7. Add any other words to accent the calendar.

8. Now the fun and detail begins! Create those numbers. Use all the same numbers, or go a step beyond for more fun...and make them different and unique as shown above. Be sure the numbers you add aren't too heavy and that there is room to add magnets to the back. I found magnets at the dollar store.Use a glue gun to secure the magnets or magnets with an adhesive backing.

9. String ribbon through those top holes to hang.

10. Store the numbers behind the cookie sheet and bring out a new one each day.

We also swapped out the first set of recipes for the Recipe swap and discovered that we still have to make 11 copies each. For dinner, I made the recipe that I had done for the swap to try it out. It was called Turkey Dinner Shepherd's Pie it was a huge hit and a wonderful use of your holiday meal left overs!!

Turkey Dinner Shepherd's Pie

3 cups cooked stuffing ( you can use Stove Top)
1 cup cranberry sauce,
1 pound sliced cooked turkey (you can replace with store bought cooked chicken)
1 1/2 cups cooked carrots, (or another leftover vegetable. I used green beans)
1/2 cup of gravy over the top,
3 to 4 cups mashed potatoes

Directions

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a 13 x 9-inch baking dish, mound stuffing on bottom; layer with cranberry sauce, turkey, and carrots. Drizzle with gravy; spread potatoes over surface to sides of dish.
2. Bake until heated through and potatoes are golden, 35 to 40 minutes. Let cool slightly
3. Serve with cranberry sauce if desired.

For our November meeting we will be making a Cookie Sheet Advent Calendar like the one in the photos above..
This is a big project so please arrive on time (2:00 PM) so that we can begin immediately.
You will need the following supplies:

1 small cookie sheet not Teflon coated. (The Dollar Store or Walmart are great places to find one)
Acrylic Paint and brush

A couple coordinating Christmas themed patterned papers that measure 12 x 12
An empty cereal box
At least 25 magnets (or a roll of magnet strip available at the Dollar Store)
Lots of numbers...such as rub ons or stickers
Trinkets of plenty: large buttons, stars,metal shapes, mini watch tin holders, ribbon, chipboard numbers, stars,etc.
Rub ons or stickers that spell December for topper
Glue stick
Ruler
Sharpie marker
Glitter (but of course)
Clear sealer (such as Mod podge)
Ribbon or chain for hanging

A great time was had by all and we even managed to complete 3 projects before the night was through. I'd like to welcome Chrissy, Nicki and Kiesha who were out for the first time.
Tasha was the hostess and she treated us with delicious Halloween chocolate cupcakes and I made Cabbage Roll Casserole for supper.
We magically filled our tin cans, made a really cool photo album and did and awesome glitter technique as seen on the card above.To find out how to do this technique click here

Cabbage Roll Casserole
Like the taste of cabbage rolls but hate all the work? Here is a quick alternative that tastes SO much like a normal cabbage roll:

1 lb ground chicken, turkey or beef
1/2 cup instant rice
1/2 cup onions, chopped
1 cup water
15 ozs Italian style tomato sauce
1/4 tsp salt
1 bag coleslaw mix
1/8 tsp black pepper

In a large skillet, cook chicken and onions until chicken is no longer pink. Transfer mixture to a 6-quart slow cooker. Add tomato sauce, coleslaw mix, rice, water, salt, and black pepper. Cooker will be full but cabbage will cook down. Cover and cook on low for 5 hours, or until cabbage is done.

September 27th Meeting

A great time was had by all that were able to attend our first meeting for the 2009-2010 session of Paper Chicks.I demonstrated the amazing diverse features of the Sissix Big Shot machine and we created a mummy card and a Thanksgiving card using the Big Shot and Stampin' Up punches.
We had Lasagna Soup (click here for the recipe) for supper with a salad and Marianne was our hostess and brought the most amazing Lemon and Chocolate cakes. Yes...two of them!!!

Paper Chicks is a group of amazing women who gather together monthly to create with Stampin' Up products. This blog will not only serve as a place to show off our creations it will also be a place to find some "how to's" for cards, layouts and other paper projects.
On the last Sunday of the month the Paper Chicks gather in my home for creativity, laughter and great food.
Because everyone spends the monetary minimum on Stampin' Up stuff, it allows the opportunity to each person to reap the hostess benefits of free stuff!
I prepare a light supper and I will pst the monthly recipes and the hostess is responsible for desserts!
